So no run-time solutions, no peer to peer, no FileMaker Standard, and I’m willing to bet in a couple years you won’t even be able to buy FileMaker outright, you will have to license it. The head of Ashton-Tate at the time, Ed Esber managed to make himself one of the most hated men in the software industry by relentlessly attacking 3rd party developers and trying to make it impossible for them to create run-time solutions(among many many other tactics).Ĭlaris wants to extract every single penny from FileMaker, and that means relentlessly crushing any avenue that enables somebody to use FileMaker without sending a constant stream of revenue into Claris’s coffers.
30 years ago Ashton-Tate was doing its best to smash the independent use of compiled run-time DBase databases that could be sold and run without Ashton-Tate making any money. I’m a bit of a tech history buff and this isn’t new behavior for a greedy relational database company. That’s not making Claris/Apple any money hence why it had to be shut down. Peer to peer was dropped for an excellent reason-it enabled developers to build stand alone solutions for small businesses that didn’t need a full server setup.
